Noticing the high prevalence of teen pregnancies in their secondary school, the girls in our Sauti ya Dada club at Milimatatu Secondary School in Turkana, Kenya designed a Creative Advocacy Practicum to address this problem. The girls worked with their mentor and a local artist to unpack and better understand the issue and to create an educational presentation to call for change.
Utilizing theater, dance, poetry and visual art in a final community presentation, the girls educated their teachers, students, local leaders and health officers on the problem and urged them to take action.
The girls hope that their advocacy action will break the stereotypes and myths surrounding the use of contraceptives and motivate the parents and teachers to educate girls on reproductive health and the dangers of teen pregnancy.
