Promoting the Health of the Selva Maya Park

Art Medium: Theater and Street Parade

Partner: FUNDAECO

 Location: Peten, Guatemala

Artist: Reyes Josue Morales

Members of the "Women and Girls, Healthy and Empowered" Program of FUNDAECO and local forest rangers strengthened their skills to promote the conservation of the Selva Maya park, whose biodiversity is currently under threat by mining companies. Over the course of four days, participants created a public visibility campaign featuring theater, a public parade, and a day-long festival to promote the conservation of the Selva Maya park amongst the local population.

The campaign is replicable for future use and utilizes a creative and participatory approach to environmental education. At the end of the project, the program team was strengthened with skills, knowledge, and educational materials to better promote environmental conservation, while local women and girls were empowered as change leaders.

"We worked with an innovative methodology, which helped us expand our knowledge, re-imagine and see more deeply. Undoubtedly, a participatory methodology that give us tools we can replicate in our educational programs with our community groups." -Dayana Chinchilla, FUNDAECO Representative
