Music and Art for the Ocean: The Culture that Unites Us

Art Medium: Music and Parade

Partner: Asociación Multicultural de Mujeres para el Desarrollo Integral y Sostenible (AMMUDIS)

Location: Livingston, Guatemala

30 local youth, the majority of whom are children of local fishermen, led this Creative Advocacy Practicum that combined ocean conservation with a celebration of their local Garifuna culture. Using traditional music, dance, and creative costumes, the youth educated their community on the importance of ocean conservation at a joyful community parade and gathering that brought together over 200 community members. During the community event, the youth emphasized the importance of regulating over-fishing, exploring new sustainable income opportunities in tourism, and caring for their local ecosystem as paths to ensure a better future for all.
