Maria is an 18-year old young woman from Tanzania, who attended the East African Girls Leadership Summit just a year ago. She loves singing gospels, having adventures and being a Senior Prefect at the Sega Girls Secondary School. In her community, many girls don’t receive an education because traditional gender roles keep them at home or married at a young age. At the Summit, Maria learned that an educated girl is healthier, has greater economic power, can put an end to intergenerational poverty and help to solve global challenges like climate change.
Armed with creative advocacy tools like dance, theater, song and poetry, Maria went to work educating other girls about their rights and making presentations to parents about the value and power of allowing their daughters to go to school. She is responsible for more girls enrolling and succeeding in school, inspired to pursue their dreams to own a business or become a politician. Maria says, “I hope that one day these girls will change the world. For now, we are supporting and empowering other girls in their communities.”
